Introduction

Head Check is a feature that enable the printer to perform a pass-check on labels as they are printed. Head Check is enabled by default and will stop the applicator once it notices poor barcode/print quality. Typically, the print quality is still sufficient to pass USPS standards, but Eii advises the print head should be swapped at the next opportunity.

Once the applicator throws a head error, it will continue to throw them for every mail piece set on the machine, stopping the belt each time. Should you need to run mail before you can replace the printhead, the first half of these instructions show how you disable the Head Check feature. Once the printhead has been replaced, you will want to re-enable the Head Check feature. The second half of the following instructions walk you through turning Head Check back on.

Disabling Head Check

1. Set the Print Engine display to “Offline Mode” by hitting the “Line” button near the SATO display.

2. Hit the “Enter” button to bring up the settings menu.
3. Using the arrow keys, highlight “Advanced Mode” and hit “Enter”.
4. Hit the “Enter” button 5 times, until you reach the “Head Check” setting.

Note: Do not make changes to any settings in these menus beyond disabling the head check. Doing so could result in the applicator malfunctioning.
5. While viewing the “Head Check” setting, use the Arrow keys to disable the Head Check.

Note: The Head Check should only ever be disabled in the short period of time in between the initial Head Error and swapping the print head. Failure in replacing the print head in the appropriate time may result in USPS barcode quality fees.

6. Continue hitting the “Enter” button until the display is brought back to the settings menu. Press “Cancel” to be returned to the “Offline” screen.
7. Press the “Line” Button to return the print engine to Online Mode. You may now continue to run mail with the head check disabled.
